The Shagaya Concentrated Wind Power project (Kuwait)

Information

W'wave and the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) have signed an MoU to perform a pioneering, first-of-a-kind large-scale pilot project of W’wave® WindWave at KISR’s Shagaya wind farm, which is part of Shagaya Renewable energy park - phase I.

The Project

In this pioneer project, the WindWave concentrator will be installed at 3 (out of 5) of its turbines. The installation of the WindWave will lead to the optimization of the initial wind conditions at the turbines’ rotor level (i.e.: increase wind speed, reduce turbulence intensity and reduce wind shear) so that the turbines next to where it is installed increase their power production, achieving better levelized cost of energy (#LCoE).

Measurements & Tests

The turbine’s power curve will be evaluated without and with the WindWave solution to assess the new power curve. Moreover, installing our WindWave in 3 (out of 5) of the wind farm turbines will enable to compare production with the neighbouring turbines without WindWave.

Also, the Project includes structural load measurements in the turbines aiming at assessing the remaining operational lifetime. According to our research in the field, experimental data will back the previous desktop analyses that conclude no impact on the operational lifetime of the turbines, as higher loads stemming from the wind speed increase will be compensated by lower loads stemming from the decrease in turbulence intensity and lower wind shear.

The Project’s results will be evaluated by an independent 3rd party certification body.
